Wireless Standards: What's New with 802.11n and Beyond
Industry expert Craig Mathias of Farpoint Group, a huge proponent of 802.11n and a long-standing member of the Wi-Fi Alliance, was kind enough to be the guest speaker for our June 19, 2007 webcast on the technology.
Here is some of what he covered:
  • Predicts IEEE 802.11 a/b/g WiFi products will be phased out by 2009
  • All major WLAN chip vendors are producing .11n chipsets today
  • "Real" products should be available the second half of this year (2007)
  • 802.11n will largely operate in the 5 GHz range
  • Higher throughput means more wireless voice, location, and video
  • Security settings will remain unchanged
  • Controller-based architectures may be impacted by significantly higher data rates
